Saturday would be a great time for surfing to be unveiled at the Olympics. Yes, many would expect surfing to be a part of the Summer Olympics, but we all know that surfing is not all about boardies and sunshine, and the Winter Olympics currently on in Sochi, Russia, has a swell on the way.
The surf is forecasted to reach a respectable three-foot with offshore winds this Saturday, and Sochi has a handful of potential spots to make the most of the swell on offer. Like this long right hander which is one of the most consistent waves in the area.
Also, a few kilometres south of Sochi is a mirror image of California’s famous Malibu Point.
Competitors will probably need 8mm wetsuits to brave the Russian winter, hard luck, but we wanna watch surfing in the Olympics and no pussies have ever won a gold medal.
Here’s a token video of some local Russian surfers scoring on a surf trip to Sochi:
That dude at the end of the video. On the park bench. What a smooth cat.
This got me thinking – would surfing be a winter or a summer sport – and so which games would it belong to? Its not a winter sport in that, well, all winter games rely on something frozen, but then again surfing’s better moments happen either in, or as a result winter – cyclone and hurricane swells being the exception.
So, maybe there’s space for a third Olympics – the Ocean Games, including surfing (various disciplines) kite and windsurfing, sailing, free diving, ocean kayaking, etc. It would free up the dilemma of trying to squeeze surfing into the summer games, somehow, somewhere and give the opportunity to raise environmental issues affecting the ocean – possibly as a chief legacy focus in the place where they occur.
You heard it here first.
Bring it on…Aloha
