Surf Ninja – Rob Hope

Ever since Lambda Lambda Lambda kicked Alpha Beta butt in the Revenge of the Nerds, techno types the world over were given a new found respect. So when our latest Surf Ninja claimed to be a ‘geek’ it didn’t phase us one bit. The fact that he is the reigning Kalk Bay Shootout champion just adds to the fact that the geeks have well and truly taken over the world.

Meet this week’s featured underground wave assassin, Rob Hope:

AGE: 30
LOCAL SPOT: Kalk Bay

BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
There is nothing better than sharing barrels with friends, but the uniqueness of an actual wave is what I think makes surfing so special. There are so many variables to make the surf perfect (including crowds) that when everything aligns, we really are grateful. A perfect surf, with barrels, can instantly change your outlook on the world. Food tastes better, beer tastes crisper, your patience grows longer – you become more tolerant to the negative happenings around you and focus on the good things.

WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Getting killed by a shark is a reality in South Africa.

TO MAKE A LIVING I…
Run a niche website called One Page Love which I started in 2008. It showcases beautiful one page websites, templates and resources. I also blog about minimalistic design over at mmminimal and build WordPress Themes with ThemeCobra.

THREE TRACKS/SONGS THAT HELP YOU SHRED?
NOFX – The Decline

Thrice – Deadbolt
Slayer – Mind Control

BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW?
“Best” is really subjective in surfing. I guess, Dane is probably the best free surfer in the world whereas JOB is probably the best barrel rider. Contest wise – I really do think Jordy has all the skills to win a title (his forehand carve is unrivaled in my opinion), but I think Kelly is still the smartest competitor on tour – not to mention him being able to do full rotation air-revo’s at 42, is incredible.

DAWNIE OR ARVO SESH?
I used to say dawnie but we tend to have a bit of morning sickness in the Cape, so I’d say the arvo while everyone is still at work and the sun is out (not that anyone works in Cape Town if the surf is good). If I lived in Durbs or anywhere up the east coast it would be the dawnie.

WHICH SURF SPOT DO YOU HAVE TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE?
Donkey Bay and close second is Greenbush.

WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURFING, YOU CAN BE FOUND WHERE?
Building websites at my home in Lakeside; geeking out at tech events around Cape Town; or hanging out with the False Bay surf rats.

BIGGEST FEAR?
To find myself bored one day, or to not have the urge to push myself.

BEST SURFING MEMORY?
I recently won the Kalk Bay Shootout. It was unexpected to win my first contest at 30 and a great feeling, but nothing really compares to sharing a south swell at Kalk Bay with the local surfers. Turning 30 in Bali in August this year and sharing pumping Padang with close friends needs a mention for sure. It’s been a great year.
