Zag reckons that one of the reasons East London’s lineups aren’t an un-orderly mess like many bigger city lineups, is because many of the locals look like the type of men that will put you quickly in line. Nicknames like ‘Monkey’ and ‘Bigfoot’ just add to the order.
But on spending time in Slummies, you’ll realise that these guys are in fact some of the friendliest guys around – even if they look like they could choke you out, or are debt-collectors – like this week’s Surf Ninja Jonathan Bruton.
Jono has been ruling the waves around his hometown of Gonubie for years now, he’s just been doing it without the rest of the world knowing – like a real Surf Ninja would. Unlike a ninja, however, Jono does it with a smile…
NAME: Jono Bruton

BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
The fact that it’s not just a hobby or a sport, but a lifestyle. Something that is lived 24/7 even when you are not in the water. The distinct aura that surrounds surfers, the way that they talk and walk allows you to pick another surfer out of crowd in a room almost instantaneously. It’s a connection that’s universal and no matter where you go in the world, or what language you speak, surfing brings people together, it’s the bridge between social barriers and cultures.
WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Paddling out for a session and just ALWAYS being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Sometimes coming in after a two hour surf only being able to brag about getting sucked over the falls on a beast and almost dying….
TO MAKE A LIVING I..?
I am a general manager for land sharks (attorneys), specialising in motor vehicle third party recoveries and out of court settlements.
THREE TRACKS/ALBUMS THAT HELP ME SHRED?
Swollen Members – Black Magic
Blue October – Dirt Room
Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the Name
BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW?
Parko!!! Smooth and on the rail!
DAWNIE OR ARVO SESH?
Since I am not much of an early bird, I will take the Arvo option – when everyone is surfed out, watching the rugby and drinking beer, that’s when I’m in the water.
WHICH SURF SPOT DO YOU HAVE TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE?
“The Point” – Nias Island, Indo
WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURFING, YOU CAN BE FOUND WHERE?
Taking a beating at Sean O’ Connel’s MMA Academy.
Anything that has more than 4 legs terrifies me.
BEST SURFING MEMORY?
Bunking school on a perfect summer’s morning with some of the Gonubie crew. We paddled out to the point naked. The school busses drive within 50 meters of the break, and we timed it perfectly so that we all took off on a wave to moon the school bus! After that it was a race back to land to hide everyone else’s kit so that they had to walk around the beachfront starkers looking for their clothes.
