The quiet town of Onrus isn’t that quiet when you’re out in the lineup, where local rippers like Jon-Sam Caswell are busting enough sick moves to keep the core local crew hooting almost every ride. Meet Onrus local Jon-Sam Caswell, this week’s Surf Ninja…
NAME: Jon-Sam Caswell
LOCAL SPOT: Onrus, Hermanus
BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Barrels, Bikinis, the feeling when you are totally surfed out and rad mates in the water.
WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Every time mates and I hit a night on the town to cut loose, the next morning the surf is absolutely firing for the first time in ages and stops firing as soon as your head feels okay again…
TO MAKE A LIVING I..?
Do construction (support structures). In season I do surf lessons as Hermanus is a very seasonal dorpie. I am also a professional beer connoisseur.
THREE TRACKS THAT HELP YOU SHRED?
Anything from Rage Against the Machine.
BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW?
Aaahhhh difficult one… Taj is still the best!
DAWNIE OR ARVO SESH?
WHICH SURF SPOT DO YOU HAVE TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE?
Teahupoo – just one solid barrel and a few tears afterwards, then I’ll be ready to see the light.
WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURFING, YOU CAN BE FOUND..?
Chilling with family, friends or outdoor “events”
Losing a family member.
BEST SURFING MEMORY?
Was after surfing a nudest beach in Port Elizabeth. After the session my friend got out his wetsuit and we ripped the towel off him, and he ended up running around like a headless chicken straight to a very “happy” old man with a serious mustache and a thong. My mate decided to grab his towel and make a run for it, but the old gay dude didn’t want any of that, so he decided to run after him. My last memory was my naked friend and Magnum PI running into the sunset…
