The name may ring a bell and conjure up thoughts of massive waves and late drops – as they should because he’s one of this country’s hardest charging goofyfoots – but we still classify Cape Town’s Jeremy Johnson a ‘Surf Ninja’, simply because he’s performing his art far and away from the eyes of the masses, with evidence of his wave slaying captured only in pixels, or in the memory banks of his fellow big wave brethren.
Whether it’s tackling monster waves at Dungeons or Sunset, breaking boards at Bayview, or getting towed into life-changing waves in Ireland, this week’s Surf Ninja thrives on a challenge.
Meet Jeremy Johnson.
NAME: Jeremy Johnson
LOCAL SPOT: Sunset / Dungeons
BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Big glassy days.
WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
When you are super amped for a swell, watch it religiously for a week and it never comes, or the winds are wrong. It happens a lot in Cape Town!
TO MAKE A LIVING I ..?
I just got a new contract from Billabong, but I also do some stunt work for movies, as well as fishing charters.
THREE TRACKS THAT HELP YOU SHRED?
The old school stuff still gets me amped – Metallica, Bad Religion, Pennywise, etc…
BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW?
Shane Dorian and John John Florence.
DAWNIE OR ARVO SESH?
Dawnie all the way through to an Arvo sesh, if we get lucky!
WHICH SURF SPOT DO YOU HAVE TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE?
Cloudbreak, when it’s big.
WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURFING, YOU CAN BE FOUND WHERE?
On my ski fishing, or in the mountains running, mountain biking or snowboarding.
BIGGEST FEAR?
Missing waves.
BEST SURFING MEMORY?
Watching my friend Andy Marr get the biggest wave I have ever seen in 2006 out at Dungeons.
