Yellow Sands is where this Slummies ripper calls ‘home’, and it’s there among its fun peaks and sharks that he learned his wave slaying skills. His tertiary education is keeping him busy these days, but that hasn’t slowed his progress as he shreds harder, faster and with more style each session. Meet this week’s Surf Ninja, Jean du Plessis…
NAME: Jean du Plessis
AGE: 21
LOCAL SPOT: Yellow Sands, East London
BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
The feeling of being at peace and sharing the stoke!
WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
Port Elizabeth.
TO MAKE A LIVING I?
Rely on my parents for money, as I’m currently studying.
THREE TRACKS THAT HELP YOU SHRED?
Lil Wayne – Cashed Out
Lil Wayne – Kobe Bryant
Kid Cudi – Heart of a Lion
BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW?
It’s between John John and Gabriel Medina – probably John John though.
DAWNIE OR ARVO SESH?
It’s difficult to wake up early these days, but nothing beats a banging dawnie to start the day.
WHICH SPOT DO YOU HAVE TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE?
I’ve stood on the beach at the Donkey and watched one foot, two kilometre long waves reel down the beach. Need to get back there on a good swell.
WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURFING, YOU CAN BE FOUND WHERE?
Skating the park or finding something to do that can give me some sort of adrenaline rush. This mostly doesn’t involve going to class.
GREATEST FEAR?
Losing people that are close to me, and probably Ebola as well – that shit’s real!
BEST SURFING MEMORY?
Cruising around the Mentawai Islands with my brother and a good mate on a 60ft luxury yacht called Abundant Life. One month in that place can go so quick when you’re getting shacked all day, everyday. Indonesia is a damn special place!
