Before he grew facial hair, this underground wave assassin was collecting heat wins across the country as one of SA’s top juniors. Years later now and he is still killing it in the surf, just not in as many heats and with a lot more hair on his chin.
Meet this week’s Surf Ninja, Dylan Stewart…
NAME: Dylan Stewart
AGE: 31
LOCAL SPOT: Umdloti
BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
For me, surfing is where I get to go and express myself, let go and forget about the real world. Nothing beats spending time in the water with my lady, brother and mates, seeing the stoke on their faces whilst scoring good waves and having a few laughs.
WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
I’d have to say injuries, when you’re pushing it hard there’s always a price to pay. After that I’d say flat spells, bluebottles and SUPs.
TO MAKE A LIVING I..?
Work in a family business as the Operations Manager of a self-adhesive label printing company based in Redhill, Durban North.
BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW?
Jords. It’s going to come together, just you watch.
THREE TRACKS THAT HELP YOU SHRED?
Alestorm – Drink
Ozzy Osbourne – Rock n’ Roll Rebel
Slipknot – Duality
DAWNIE OR ARVO SESH?
A bit of both really. Arvos during the week because of graft, and weekends well, just surf all day if possible.
WHICH SPOT DO YOU HAVE TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE?
P-Pass, I want some of those gaping barrels.
WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURFING, YOU CAN BE FOUND WHERE?
Training at Domination Knuckle Game, diving or hanging with Kat. Otherwise with mates having a braai, sucking a few wetties and talking over the surf we had.
GREATEST FEAR?
Not being able to surf again.
BEST SURFING MEMORY?
I would have to say a family trip down to Seals when I was a grom. We surfed our brains out for days on end, until my eyes felt like they were going to fall out from all the salt water.
