Damn, did we get some filthy waves in September. At one point it felt like the whole country was firing on all cylinders all at the same time; from Cape Town through J-Bay straight up to Durban, brothers were getting pitted left, right and centre. Safe to say, we’ve been getting some crazy entries into the Striped Horse Challenge, with September being a far more difficult month to judge than August, but after much deliberation and a split panel decision, with just one vote more going towards the winning wave, the September winner of the Striped Horse Challenge is… drums please: Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker.
For his casual, stalled, side entry into a heaving Sunset pit, dredging below sea-level, Twig will receive R1000 worth of Hurricane accessories, a case of beers from Striped Horse and gets placed in the running for the grand prize at the end of competition. Really just another day’s work for the reigning WSL Big Wave World Champion (we love saying that).
Remember, the overall winner of the Striped Horse Challenge will receive a return flight to Hawaii and R30 000 cash courtesy of Striped Horse and Zigzag; and R30 000 worth of accessories and surfboards from Hurricane Surf, plus R10 000 will go to the videographer/photographer who captured the ride.
We know the waves have been heaving through Spring, better get those entries rolling in if you want to be a contender. And remember, we also reward the biggest wipe outs. So if you got hit by the big stick, send us the evidence and we’ll help heal your pain.
