Off The Lip Movember Surf Jam Returns To Beach Bums
The Off the Lip Movember Surf Jam is going down once again, so dress up 70’s style, dust off the old retro surfboard and join the movement for men’s health. Quiksilver is supporting Movember, which in South Africa is licensed by the Men’s Foundation, to create awareness and raise funds for Movember. Men are facing a health crisis that isn’t talked about, they are dying before their time. You can help change that.
During the month of November grow a moustache, get together for a Movember event, any excuse for a good time, or do what the surfers taking part in the Off the Lip Movember Surf Jam will be doing on the Saturday 26 November and move for Movember. It’s easy to get involved and stop men dying too young.
Join Off the Lip Movember Surf Jam as it returns to Beach Bums on the North Coast, it promises to be a day of fun down at the beach. Entries have already started pouring in for this year’s edition of the event with three big names already confirmed. Umhlanga’s Beyrick de Vries, Durban North’s David Van Zyl and defending champion Brandon Jackson also from Durban North. “I can’t wait to surf the event this year, I have been away every year surfing international events but will be here this year to give Jacko a run for his money, I’ve got my twin fin ready” said an excited De Vries.
Now in its fourth year, Off the Lip is quickly gaining prominence in the surf calendar. The event will see 72 surfers taking to the water with six-man heats with traditional beach starts in practice. The three divisions will include open mens, ladies and a legends division (for surfers over the age of 50 years old). Various fun awards such as “Vert Alert”, “Spin To Win”, “Wave Waster” and “Best Dressed Mo In Character” will also be up for grabs with some great prizes put up by sponsors Quiksilver, Gunslinger, Nixon and Flying Fish. Various single and twin fin surfboards from the seventies era will be available for surfers to test drive, old school rock ’n roll surf tunes will be the order of the day. Action gets underway at 10:00am with the finals expected to be held at 15:00pm.
Mo Sista Heather “Fergie” Clark, a Movember ambassador, is super stoked for Off the Lip action. The surf coach once ranked 3rd among female surfers in the world, will be dusting off her tie-dyed t-shirt and getting on a retro board to show her support for men’s health. For this women’s surfing legend, Movember is personal. “Shortly after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer my dad went for a routine checkup and was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Through their positivity and love for life, I’m proud to say that both my parents are cancer survivors. Please guys, speak up, stop putting it off and have your checkups regularly! Do this for yourself and for the people who love and care for you.” To support Clark’s Movember fund raising efforts click HERE.

All proceeds on the day, which are raised through participant entry fees as well as various raffles, will be donated to the Movember Foundation, a foundation aimed at bringing awareness and raising necessary funds for various men’s health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
Quiksilver’s Dane Patterson anticipates there to be a big turn out this year, “We love putting this event on with the crew from Movember every year, it’s for a great cause, everyone has a good time and it really pulls the surf community together. We’ve got some good entertainment lined up for after the event this year so we’re encouraging everyone to come down and enjoy the day, even if you don’t surf, GROW A MO SAVE A BRO.”
