Masters Rock Mossels on Day 1 of SA Masters Champs

Day 1 of the SA Masters Surfing Champs kicked-off with solid lines rolling down the rocky point at Mossel Bay’s Outer Pool.

This obviously stoked out the competitors from eight different provinces, who’d made their way to the Southern Cape in order to compete against this country’s best 30-plus-year-olds.

The opening rounds saw the first few surfers dispatched out the competition – which means they’ll be spending Friday and this weekend cheering on their teammates (in-between sessions tearing apart the Inner Pool). Meanwhile, those that saw off their challengers on Day 1 will be looking to keep the momentum going into Day 2, and on through the weekend – when the champions will be crowned.

Talking about momentum, the swell peaked at a solid 6-8ft for the afternoon Seniors heats – which made sure there was plenty of room for heat winners like Tyrell Johnson (BOR), Phil Neil (BOL), Allan Johns (ZUL) and Lu Whittaker (SC) to show their competitors what they’ve got.

Seniors competitor Kelvin Zehmke (EP) tears into a solid one at Outer Pool to advance to Day 2.

Competition has already resumed on Day 2 with powerful walls still stacking themselves along Outer Pool’s curve – this should ensure an exciting day of action as the ballies (and ladies) give it their all for provincial and personal glory.
