Yesterday, Sunday 4th December, saw Saffa Jordy Smith, finally, claim his first victory in Hawaii by taking out the win at the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach. Jordy’s tactful rail game earned him an 8.73 and 6.33 in the finals.
“Unbelievable, can’t believe it,” said Jordy. “I feel like this event has eluded me in the past. I didn’t have any expectations coming in this year, I think that was the difference. I just kind of went out there with an open mind”
His excellent year on tour has him currently ranked third on the WCT. His recent win has now seen him move to third place on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing rankings going into the final event at Pipeline starting on Thursday. Jordy has copped a fair bit of criticism over the years for his performances in heavy tropical reef waves. This win will help improve his track record in the big stuff. A Triple Crown would seal the deal. We can’t wait to see what the big man does at Pipe. Right now the Sunset champ is probably out jolling celebrating the win, but check in at the Zag tomorrow for a more in-depth Q&A and breakdown of his first Hawaiian win.
