Jordy Gets Boxed at the Drug Aware Pro

Jordy Smith is through to the quarter finals of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro after defeating Miguel Pupo in shallow, square barrels at The Box – which finally saw some heats.

It took both competitors a wave or two to find their bearings at the tricky and technical slab, but once they did a couple of proper barrels (and wipeouts) added some excitement to the event.

Here is a look at Jordy’s best wave and his worst. Both epic:

Jordy will face Bede Durbidge in the semi-finals, where he will look to get revenge after finishing second to the Australian in their non-elimination Round 4 heat surfed earlier in the day at Surfers’ Point.

Josh Kerr and Joel Parkinson made it clear that they had surfed The Box before, by taking off way behind the peak and getting the deepest barrels of the Round. Parko, who was celebrating 33 years on earth, scored himself a square birthday barrel and a spot in the quarter finals.

Kelly, who has been crying out for a heat at The Box, missed the opportunity by advancing directly to the quarter finals after winning his Round 4 heat earlier in the day at Margaret River’s main peak.

Current world rankings leader, Gabriel Medina, also took the easy route to the quarter finals by winning in Round 4 – avoiding a tricky heat at The Box, which is not the easiest wave to surf on your backhand. Still, he might have to surf the super slab in the quarter finals if contest organisers decide to run the finals there.

Quarter final match-ups are as follows:

Heat 1: Bede Durbidge vs Jordy Smith
Heat 2: Gabriel Medina vs Josh Kerr
Heat 3: Kelly Slater vs Joel Parkinson
Heat 4: Nat Young vs Michel Bourez
