Taking some time to clean up the trash that washes up on your beach is something that surfers should do all year round. But thanks to our friends at Tuffy and supported by Share the Stoke and Firewire, we get to reward those high energy, environmentally conscious, earth loving surfers with one brand new Firewire worth R10 000 per month from 1 Oct 2017 to 31 March 2018 for their efforts. Yes the Tuffy Clean Your Beach campaign is kicking off again and it’s a great impetus to get you out there, doing your bit to fight the tide of plastic waste clogging our oceans and marine environment.
This year we’re taking the Tuffy Clean Your Beach campaign further, by encouraging folks to sort through their trash and send through the info, so we can figure out where the different kinds of plastic washing up on our beaches, are coming from… And what the different trash profiles are for the different areas. We’ll be including a Tuffy Clean Your Beach checklist and recycled plastic bag for collecting trash in the next issue of Zag. In order to process all the info, we’re linking up with the Beach Co-operative to channel this information to researchers from UCT’s Environmental Studies Department. And to encourage you guys to go the extra mile and sort through the plastic trash, we’ll be dishing out some special Zag prizes (t-shirts, sunblock, wax, leashes, changing mats and other sick surf swag) to those who separate and shoot pics of the type of trash collected, as part of their entries! So it’s win win.
And just a heads up, there’s a Beach Clean Up taking organised for 8am, Thursday 19 October 2017 at Muizenberg corner on the low tide, so you can really get in there and scour out those rock pools on the Spring Low Tide.
Until then, keep it clean and send your Tuffy Clean Your Beach entries to comps@zigzag.co.za
