And who wouldn’t want to surf against the world’s best at one of the world’s finest right-handers, especially with at least a R100 000 payday at the end of it?

With only 24 spots up for grabs in the JBU Supertrial, surfers have been asked to send in their motivation as to why they should earn an invite into the event. From these, the panel of judges – including representatives from the World Surf League (WSL), The JBay Underground Surf Club (JBU) and Zigzag Surfing Magazine – will decide who will contest the Supertrial.

Beyrick De Vries is determined to earn a spot in the Supertrial.

Entries for the JBU Supertrial remain open until Monday 11 May, after which the judges will decide who’ll be competing between 1 – 12 June in the best possible conditions at Supertubes.

Check out the official press release by RVCA below, or go to zigzag.co.za/supertrial to enter.

TOP SOUTH AFRICAN SURFERS ENTERED INTO THE JBU SUPERTRIAL PRESENTED BY RVCA

RVCA

Jeffreys Bay – The entries for the JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA have been flowing through consistently, with some big-hitters dropping video highlights to get into the event. The JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA will see 24 of the country’s best surfers compete for that one slot into the WSL Championship Tour’s JBay Open, and a minimum prize of US$9000 (ZAR109k).

The JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA has a waiting period of 1 – 12 June, and the entries for the event close Monday 11 May 2015. There is a strict policy of No Entry No Invite – surfers will not be automatically invited into the event based on surfing skills or contest records. All entries via the Zigzag Magazine website event portal www.zigzag.co.za/supertrial.

First up is the Supertubes aficionado Sean Holmes from Cape Town. The blurb accompanying his entry reads, “I would be super stoked to be considered as a candidate for the JBU Super Trial. I’m fit, surfing well, and ready to lay down some ruler-edge carves.” Sean has defeated world champions at Supertubes including Kelly Slater and the late Andy Irons, has the nickname ‘The Nemesis’ and is known world-wide as the best wild card in the sport. Check out Sean’s entry here >>

Slade Prestwich is a big-hitter from Durban who won the Volcom VQS Global Championships at Cloudbreak, Fiji in 2013. That year he also placed third in the JBay Open, and is no slouch when it comes to riding the perfect walls of Supertubes. Slade is currently competing on the WQS and is set for big results. Umhlanga Rocks surfer Beyrick de Vries made a huge statement when he snagged a giant wave at Sunset Beach in Hawaii in 2013. The wave was in the Vans Triple Crown Of Surfing event, and the resultant barrel saw him score a deserved 10-point ride and have the crowds screaming their appreciation. Beyrick was a JBU Supertrial trialist last year and has dropped a solid video entry for this year’s tournament here >>

Simon Fish from East London is one of the best backhand surfers around, and was named as SA’s most under-rated surfer in a vote by his peers in Zigzag Magazine. According to his entry, his strong points are his backhand tube riding, drawn-out carves and vertical surfing. His entry can be viewed here >>

“It has been great to see some of the best surfers in the country submit their entries into the event,” said event organiser and JBU representative Koffie Jacobs. “We’re looking forward to the rest of the entries.”

The JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA  is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa. Surfing South Africa is a member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), and recognised by the Dept. of Sport and Recreation as the national controlling body for surfing.

The JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA precedes the JBay Open Championship Tour event, which is the anchor event of the JBay Winterfest.
