After last Thursday’s incredible sessions at Sunset and Dungeons, as well as a solid swell hammering one of the Western Cape’s other famed big wave spots the week prior, entries for the Striped Horse Challenge in association with RVCA, Twig Surfboards and Hurricane have been rolling in like a giant set.

The aim of the Striped Horse Challenge is to reward SA’s hardest charger* with R20 000 cash and a ticket to Hawaii (plus a stack of other epic prizes), so they can go and show what they’re made off and make name at one of the surfing world’s ultimate proving grounds – Hawaii in winter.
South Africa has a history of producing world-champion big wave surfers, and with the younger crew being expertly guided by the chargers who’ve been taking off on the biggest waves they can paddle into for decades, this looks likely to continue; with surfers like Matt Bromley, James Lowe and Josh Redman showing absolute skill and bravery in testing conditions and leading the new charge.

Entries for the Striped Horse Challenge close at the end of September, after which the winner will be announced. Go to stripedhorsechallenge.co.za to see all the entries, and remember to drop a comment to be in line for one of the weekly prize hampers that are being given away by sponsors: Striped Horse, RVCA and Hurricane.
* The photographer or videographer who captures the winning ride will also claim R10 000 cash as a prize.
