The Northern Hemisphere winter is a busy time for many of the world’s professional big wave surfers.
It has been especially so for SA’s most recognised charger.
Twiggy charges Mavericks during Thanksgiving.
Since leaving SA’s shores in late November, Twiggy has been a man on a mission. His first stop was in Northern California to go ride some monsters at Mavericks during Thanksgiving, before heading to Hawaii for the opening ceremony of the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.
Just before Christmas, Twig then jumped on a plane to the Basque country to take out the win at the Arnette Punta Galea Big Wave Invitational, which put him on top of the Big Wave World Tour standings.

Following his celebration in Spain, Twiggy hopped back to Hawaii to meet his fiancé Kate Lovemore for a bit of festive season bonding, before once again boarding a flight to Europe when the storm nicknamed ‘Hercules’ started showing its colourful rings on the swell charts early in the new year. He kissed Kate goodbye and flew halfway across the world to go surf one of the biggest storms ever recorded in the North Atlantic.
Belharra in France was the chosen battlefield to meet Hercules head-on, where Twig and the big wave crew tamed some monsters and took some beatings.

Once Hercules lost his strength, Twiggy once again returned to Northern California to go test some boards at Mavericks (and get in some practice should the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational get the green light). The conditions weren’t great, but he did manage to stroke into a few bombs – which you can check out in the video below.
Now he is back in Hawaii and snuck in a session at Jaws this past weekend to round-off what has been a busy 60 days for the Saffa charger. With the waiting periods for both the Eddie and Mavericks events already well underway, perhaps it will be an incredible 90 day journey we report on as the mission continues…

In between all the charging, Twig has been slotting into some clean ‘little’ pits as well. Ocean Beach pit stop in San Francisco.
