Surfing and Sharks- WHAAT!?!

Sharks and Surfing- a documentary being made for the Wavescape Film Fest in December is busy becoming what it is destined to be- a pretty slick production featuring a host of shark experts, shark attack victims like Andrew Carter, and goebats like me who have spent way too much time in the water during the annual sardine run on the South coast of KZN every Winter. It also features Port St. Johns ripper Avuyile Siyavuya and Port Alfred’s Lungani Memani focusing on our experiences in the water surfing the East coast- they’re both good kids- busy growing up fast I was stoked to hang and surf with them a bit on the coast but the waves proved a little strong at times, but their spirits were stronger- except at New Pier 8 feet, you gota have more then a strong spirit to want to have anything to do with that! After a couple of weeks shooting, and an interview on East coast radio with shark lover Olivia Symcox they headed back to Holland to a dark edit- cave and haven’t emerged since! These pics are from their website surfingandsharks.com check it out the pics of us doing a shark dive on Aliwal Shoal are pretty wild! I still cant believe I did that- they wanted all three of us to paddle through the 100 strong pack of sharks and sit on our board dangling toe while Marc Addison filmed from below- probably one of the dumbest things I have ever done but I was happy to leave Avo and Lung’s on the boat their intentions quite clear! I remember sitting on my board just tryna breathe and not feel like sharkbait when I remembered the top of my black booties had this little grey area by my toes about the same size as a sardine- I wore the boots for a very fake sense of safety and man did that backfire! But we got the shots and I got the hell outa there still in one piece… a few weeks later Avo and I were cruising the coast looking for waves when we heard on the radio that an American researcher got chowed ‘researching’ on the same boat in the same area with those same sharks and lost his hand and leg below the knee- we both went cold- one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done- so far…

check the little grey bits on my boots- talk about a bad idea...

I even tried paddling with my fist clenched i was so paranoid about my little white hands looking tasty!

AC having his say

the boys weren't feeling it...

After a few weeks back in the Cape I saw some pretty epic conditions lining up for the coast on the charts and enlisted star shooter Ant Fox to fly down and try nail a few more ‘money shots’ and that we most certainly did…

Say NO to No Nukes in J-bay stickers!

Say NO to No Nukes in J-bay stickers it seems after a chance encounter with a local in NIna’s today i got the skinny on what’s been going down around St.Francis- it seems the very people that bandied about for support against the proposed Nuclear plant are now the first to sell out! Mr. Billabong himself just sold his plot – a strategically important piece of land that will allow the government to continue their project all for a cool price tag at that! a handy 70 million was what the little birds whispered in my ear- and then, in response to the question why sell out? ” more money for the fight” was the response- and he gos on to donate a hefty 2000 SA ront in to the ailing No Nuke campaign= wow! 2 gorrillas and the other 699 million and some change?
An interesting point(no pun intended) is what happened all those years ago when the surfers got together to fight the proposed breakwater in St.Francis- back then we had a voice i guess…

Mozambique Techobanine Port Plan a threat to SA and Conservation

ZWF FIRST ALERT – Conservationists are alarmed & shocked at the disclosure in Media reports of the massive threat posed to the KZN Maputaland region as an estimated 250,000 people could move into the 30,000 hectare area, which includes an 11,000ha industrial park, just across the border, north of Kosi Bay !!

It could well mean the death knell to the Maputaland (Mozambique) Elephant Reserve, their Coastal Marine Reserve & the recently proclaimed Futi Corridor & the influx of people could become a major increased poaching hazard to the Tembe & Ndumo Game Reserves, as well as negatively impacting the stalled dream of a Trans Frontier Peace Park.

NB: This follows the pattern of a similar devastating impact north of Kruger Park in Zimbabwe & Mozambique, where land invasion & poaching in the Save Valley, Chiredzi & Gonarezhou National Park, has reached epidemic proportions, whilst also threatening the future TFCA in this region as well.

These are worrying conservation times along the border with Mozambique !! Opposition to this project which includes the construction of an oil holding refinery and offshore SBM, and which is strongly rumored has Chinese involvement, will & and is already generating a massive International Protest Campaign.

NB: For security reasons the map acknowledged to confidential sources !! The proposed port is in the most valuable eco-zone which is highlighted in pink !!

Mozambican Transport Minister Paulo Zucula

MOZAMBIQUE is planning to build a major oil and coal harbour just 20km north of the KwaZulu-Natal border, in the heart of an international tourism and wilderness conservation zone.

The R54-billion Ponto Techobanine plan involves digging a deep-water port inside the Maputo Elephant Reserve and neighbouring Ponta do Ouro marine reserve, and running a 1 100km railway line through the centre of a newly proclaimed elephant migration corridor to South Africa.

If it goes ahead, new rail and pipelines would ferry coal, crude oil, liquid fuels and other goods between Botswana and Zimbabwe, and India and China, bypassing South African harbours and the nearby port of Maputo.

Architects of the plan suggest that the new harbour site is better suited to dock large oil tankers and cargo ships than existing ports, because of the steeper profile of the coastline near Ponto Techobanine.

However, critics fear that the plan could scupper the success of the tri-nation Lubombo transfrontier conservation project signed 10 years ago by the governments of South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland.

Although it remains unclear who might fund the project, the Mozambican government has already gazetted the boundaries of a 30 000 hectares harbour and industrial zone around Ponto Techobanine.

Mozambican Transport Minister Paulo Zucula, who signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year with the governments of Botswana and Zimbabwe, said that the new port would help to relieve the pressure on Maputo and would also help Botswana to export its minerals.

Australian mining group African Energy Resources discovered major new coal reserves at Sese, near Francistown, last year and is hoping to export the coal to India, China and other energy-hungry markets.

Though it has yet to start mining at Sese, the company has appointed high-powered Botswana businessman and former government official Blackie Marole as chairman of the local mining subsidiary company.

Marole was a former director of the De Beers diamond mining company, chairman of Barclays Bank in Botswana and Permanent Secretary for mining and energy….

'are you staring at my tail again?'

Tryda join the Miss Zag thingy after seeing a particularly striking damsel and went back again today to vote (I promise just to give her the vote) and im not a member anymore? After scrolling through a few of the social network’s pages it seems only girls are commenting- are we being barred? Social Misfit I have been described but deviant never! I even saw on the ‘zag site there’s a little facebook button that says Andrew Lange, Louis Wulff and eight others recommend this. No dis-respect to Louis or anyone else, we’re all consimate admirers of the feminine form- be it liquid Mother Ocean or the fine female shapes that have graced the beaches we’ve spent our lives lurking on! So why no boys girls? Maybe Im just useless at these social network things and im pushing the wrong buttons but im sure I joined as a member- just to vote remember..!

Anyway- it got me thinking- maybe ‘joining’ as a member of the social network means you wana be a part of it as in compete? Haibo! im gona scroll through the whole site now( for research purpose only!) and see if there any comments at all from us mere men- admirers of the female form it seems only right or am I sticking my foot even deeper in my mouth? Probably but go check it out trust me…

Lots going down and up with a late-Winter flurry of swell the goose is being chased hard both left and right- some long lefts, and rights…The Dungeons had a yawn and a stretch that had the Spartan warrior in almost everyone affiliated to the Cape Town Tow Surf Association chasing lumpy windblown beasts- it’s been a long Winter- but up until then i had managed to evade any significantly giant paddle sessions rolling with The General twig- but with Greg Long flying in and Hawaii’s Ian Walsh in the mix there wasn’t really much of a choice- pity Ian never got to tow but rules are there for a reason and i definitely respect where the CTTSA are coming from, so many crazy scenarios can potentially unfold- like what we saw with JJ the skipper on his big rubber duck with Wayne de Lange and Teegan Smith who were filming Ryan Payne having a go- they got caught by a sneaker swell on the wide bowl- he had to open the throttle last minute airborne and fell about twenty feet into the trough tail first- JJ broke his hand on the throttle lever, his partner broke his pelvis and was knocker out cold on impact- Wayne and Teegs were clearly shaken, with swamped camera gear- but there were way worse scenarios that could’ve played themselves out right there- but thanks to the presence of guys like Ross Lindsay and Greg Long on the day doing safetyon their skis, and of course the inimitable Grant Spooner who with more experience then most out there and a lifetime of water safety behind him knows what could actually happen out there…I caught up to him back on land and he was more upset then anyone, with way less then the usual animation we all agreed what we’re doing out there with a flotilla of boats and jetskis so close to the impact zone really isn’t clever, most of those boats are seagoing yes- but they weren’t designed to burst quickly on the throttle and evade a twenty foot swell- they’re for deep sea fishing! JJ’s cat is equipped with some serious horsepower thankfully- and he was able to avert a potential disaster- good on him i say! get that man a beer- but next time, and whenever else anyone wants to step into the fold at a place like Dungeons- stay on your toes, your big balls will only get you so far so beware be aware and be wary

eesh...

As far as the surfing went, Ian and Twig padlled into the melee of spartan warriors on their jetskis and caused a minor sensation which prompted Mike Shlebach to have a go while all the tow-teams buzzed around agitatedly and an hour slipped by- no waves paddled- then Mike Shlebach sctatched into a huge one- nailed it,then nothing another fifteen minutes and the tow-show was back on. I liked the look of Stu Bradburn and Jem Johnson as a team, they know each other well and will ride a lota crazy waves in the future. Paris Basson has teamed up with Mad Mike Baleta, uh-oh the super-frothers are a classic duo they stayed out there late on the second day towing, Mad Mike is in a league of his own, and Paris a veteran charger considering, Jacques Theron and James Taylor are so at ease out there you could go on and on about these guys they’re calculated madmen on a mission- as far as paddling gos though, there’s an interesting twist as the guys who cant afford a ski or dont really give a shit about towing come to the fore- Frank Solomon and Josh Redman come to mind, and on the opposite end, Stu Bradburn doesn’t really feel the paddle vibe as much, preferring to meld his downhill skating skills with the tow which he clearly handles with aplomb….

always looks a lot smaller from the side- i promise...

I sat on the boat the first day of the swell happily, the second day was different, but i still wasn’t feeling it. Long Winter, not many sessions lately the bullshit excuses were pouring outa me, inside i had already convinced myself that all this bigwave stuff is too much of a show for me, im a tube rider, i ride good waves- these waves arent good- i found a spot in te tower of this 30 foot cat wedged in listening to tunes sucking a Fishermans friend when Kaitlyin- Jem Johnson’s girlfiend tugs on my bootied foot : “Are you coming roosta?” in that cute little girly voice, without even a thought i climb onto the deck, strap on vest on under the suit and hop off the boat- me and Kaity are all over it, Jem idles by on his ski and chirps me in his man-tone: ” now i know how to get you in the water hey roosta…” hinting about his girl witha smirk- gota love it, and Kaity had a go- we scrambled onto the shoulder and bumped into John Barker Gouldy who was having his second go out there stoked- three little rookies on the shoulder- i ditch them and set up shop next to my good omen of the Cape Mickey Duffus, with his thousand yard stare i cinfide to him in all myears of surfing in the Cape whenever i see him in the water i feel good, and basically use him as a marker- thirty metres on my inside is Paris Basson who’s stoked to check me out there- aweh! he says: ” I’d rather ride twenty waves on the inside then sit out there for two hours and catch two waves- stoked- i use the madman and the calculated veteran as my markers- and stroke into three bombs on the 2,5, the one is such a liquid runway Paris tried his hardest to go with me but it was all mine there is quite simply nothing like the traditional perfect paddle in on a giant swell- i got to my feet so early right at the top thanks to the 9′0 beast of an experimental boat Spider Murphy shaped for Twig eyes forward, ears back- smooth glas and a burst of sun shafting my approach worked, like the last session i had out there in 17th August 2008 when Twig got his xxl paddle award- i waited for the lower tide- and souled out on the ‘photo bowl’ the real lanis were out the back back- like a hundred metres further over- dodging giant bowls, its my third paddle session out there- and i feel so priveledged to be a part of it- i probably enjoy the over-priced Castle drafts at The Deck overlooking the slipway a bit too much watching all the teams coming in and heading straight to us at the bar, smiles and beers all round, stories are swapped- food inhaled and the collective good endorphin and adrenaline released after a day like that leaves a palpible taste of satisfaction and a glimmer in everyone’s red- eyes i salute everyone involved, and drag myself outa there to an interview on the the big guy Kaptein Kai’s radio show on Two Ocean Vibes Monday night from 8. the station manager;s frothing to go home so he shows Kai what buttons to push and leaves us in this epic studio with Jack Daniels lying all over the place! Craig Kolesky arrives a Kai’s other guest and we’re on air! what a jol, i drank too many Redbull JD’s and git real excited, we spun some tunes of our choice and i finally got to get as drunk as i thought i should after two days bobbing in boats and on a surfboard under The Sentinel in Hout Bay- what are we dealing with? im still not even sure if im into this bigwave thing, Twig, Ian and Greg have bailed to the deserts of Namibia with their dollars and big travel-budgets and im left hiding on the Island of Llandudno happily typing these words to you out there- people of the blogisphere- hope you enjoyed my story- love and gratitude…

Last man standing

Last man standing out at New Pier today… when I paddled out there was a pack, then ten then five then Marcus Theron and then just me and Matty Kruger- the waves weren’t that bad but we all know the Durban crew have been so spoilt this year shees! And now this Late Winter weather is looking nothing short of mental- it really has been the Winter to endure, and we’ll see who the last man standing is with this spate of late season swells im gona have to sedate myself with a few too many beers tonight im so psyched for the morning session! Speaking of sedation The Non-Violent-Fisherman came alive at Rock Bottom Pub and Grill Sunday with our special blend of Rock-comedy we didn’t disappoint thanks to everyone who was there…

good 4 something 4 good

Hows Lord Royden Bryson coming with a fifth in the US open! and now Frank Solomon just won his heat at Pico Alto the 790’s are on fire…
Roy just blazed his Round of 96 heat in England as well with an 8.5 and a 7.5…

Always low-key Brys likes to let his surfing do the talking...

The peeps over in Amsterdam have started editing the Sharks and Surfing documentary I was involved in and its looking really slick we nailed some late season money shots with Anthony Fox here on the coast last week- what a luck this is a difficult part of the world to nail good video from the water, and with two days to do it we’re all super stoked with the results you can follow the progress on Facebook page Surfing and Sharks the movie or check the website www.sharksandsurfing.com

It was a big call flying all the way from Cape Town for two days of waves but we nailed it! Foxwell has turned into a machine videographer as well after chasing the Winter with me and Twig it’s a treat working with someone who’s on the same page- always coming with a couple B-grades for me blog so check it out- some pics from the Weskus with Josh and the General…

Winter keeps wailing here in the Cape it’s a crispy sunshower and welcome respite from the battering southern ocean swells and cold-fronts- word is the lani’s in J-bay have been spinning all kindsa helicopters and wheelie birds to get themselves through heats- good on ‘em i say, it ain’t easy riding small Supers… and how about that Fiji madness Holy Buddah the bar has been set and i’d almost go as far as to say Ryan Hipwood has nailed the XXL Ride of the year already! check it out on Surfline.

Another mad swell and the Winter to endure with the likes of Josh Redman and Twig in the mix, it’ll be a conservative approach for me amongst the madmen, i feel nothing sitting a bit more on the shoulder these daze but it really is “Time to man up bitches!” in the Generals words… so much more to deal with in waves of consequence- the main thing is to lose the fear of copping a hiding- almost better to get it out the way my strategy lately is to get out there, and catch a few quickly- just to ease the nerves, and take it from ther, problem is you can get your self out there- and washed back in quick sticks with a dashing on the bricks and a much shorter session while Twig sits out the back and breaks it down all 3D with his internal GPS waiting for the bombs and Josh just paddles for anything- he surfs ten foot waves like we ride a shorey! something else to take into consideration when the waves are chucking mad hollow, holy holes is this: the safest place to be is in the barrel- get inside that thing and take it from there! and dont jump off! yep, we all have that turning point in a session where we realize it’s only water and the only way out is back in! my knees get all jumpy as i type this there’s so much extra energy around when it’s on, it’s ‘time to man up’ you have to laugh or perish- sink or swim- and most of all try to enjoy the experience, like surviving a mad beating! one can come up feeling more bulletproof then ever- or sometimes you will find yourself like a fly buzzing around the biltong at an Afrikaans tea-party- overwhelmed and just waiting for your swatting! other times you can rely on the ocean to let you know when you’ve had enough, sometimes ‘one more wave’ can turn into another whole shitstorm of madness- one more wave can also turn into another ten and the session of your life- the fact remains, that you call it: when and where you wana surf- or when you let go of the rope. No matter how much irking and shit you can receive at the hands of your ghabbas i grew up a shorebreak king now i find myself in the mix with some of the hardest chargers around-! Rollling with the Ninjas I guess its very much a question of tolerance, the more you charge, the more you become ‘de-sensitized’ to it all- the first time i went out at Dungeons i couldn’t get my eyes to adjust to the magnitude of the waves, completely ovewhelmed i had three waves and called it. Now, im pretty sure a good few Winters and sessions later, when and if The Sentinel ever wakes up again- we’ll be more prepared then ever, out there, in the mix and charging! The ocean has the ability, power, and presence to continue providing experiences surf-viving crazy waves yet it is equally capable of taking it all away- the choice isn’t really even yours, once you’ve given yourself over to the power of the ocean, it’s up to her to see wether or not she’ll allow you back even on land that is so Guidance out there Winter’s minions, make hay while the sun shines, ride every wave like its your last and dont forget to remember not to forget that the ocean rules, and we are but drops of salty water in its magnificence…

“Though I am not naturally honest- i am sometimes by chance…” William Shakespeare
and in the words of The General: “time to man UP bitches!”
