The early New Year has delivered some relief to the Atlantic. Small fun waves breaking in some crystal clear water. Yeah, it was claw fist-ingly cold too!

Coming from the Bluff, in Durban, Paul Daniel is no stranger to barrels. But I bet the Bluff does not get crystal clear water like this, although, the upside to the East coast is the warm water. Oh, the scales of comparison…

These behind the wave shots are tricky. The density of the water acts like an extra lens and it throws the focus out a bit. Visibility has to be 100% to pull them off. Every now and then you capture something but it is rare.

Once you go underwater the light evaporates quick which is a killer as luminosity is the pillar ingredient in photography. Thanks to the bright sun and the light rays bouncing off the white sandy bottom it really lit the show up.

Paul’s younger brother, Matt, has also had his fair share of Zigzag coverage in the decade. He’s a Geologist by trade and had now lives in New Zealand. Back in SA for a holiday and Matt is showing that he is also no slough in throaty waves. This was a three shot sequence of Matt comfortably pig-dogging past me in the barrel. The last shot you can’t see the board tracking through the back of the wave, which would have made this sequence the real pick of the session.

Sibling rivalry - Paul, going no-hander and trying to show up his boet in the last sequence.

What I like about this shot is it gives you plenty to go on. Paul is deep but comfortable while the lip line shows a nice subtle curve. This tells you the wave is perfect and P-Diddy does not have to work hard to make the pit. I am pulling through the wave when I shot this pic, which frames the shot and offers some foreground amusement for you. Check the light reflecting off the sandy trench below. It’s only feet below the board bouncing the light right into the barrel and lighting the whole thing up.

If you want the shot you have to aim for the target - the cameraman. Matt is fully clues into the surfer-photographer dynamic.

Matt using his arms to stall, but still holding his graceful composure for the barrel shot.
