The Eddie opening ceremony went off in typical Aloha fashion this past week. Look out! The Eddie might go on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, with the biggest waves in over a decade predicted to clout the North Shore this week.

A traditional Hawaiian double hull voyager canoe was a significant part of the Eddie big-wave invitational opening ceremony. The ship is an exact replica of the one Eddie Aikau (at 31 years of age) leapt off on March 17, 1978, in massive seas on his surfboard, in order to find rescue for his crew. Aikau was never seen again.

Brock Little hits Waimea Bay during the opening ceremony to pay tribute.

Waimea Bay on Saturday the 5th of December was 20-foot. With enormous 30-foot plus waves expected to arrive on Monday the crowds were in full swing, either getting some sessions in before being sidelined as spectators or gearing up for the possible running of the Eddie.
