Hurricane Surf Company's factory burns down in Durban

The gutted remains of the Hurricane Surf Company factory the following morning.

A fire ripped through Hurricane Surf factory in Morrison Street Durban on Wednesday night. The incident started at around midnight when the Hurricane management received a call that a fire had broken out in the factory building. Co-owner Craig Butcher rushed to the scene, however, he could do little but watch as authorities spent three and half hours extinguishing the inferno. The fire was devastating and the entire factory was razed with everything in it.

Harricane Fire“It was heartbreaking to see 10 years of work go up in flames,” mentions Craig Butcher to Zigzag. “But we are committed to getting back on our feet as fast as possible. We are working around the clock to ensure the least interruption possible in the supply of Hurricane products to all of our customers.”

Hurricane will now be sharing premises with other manufacturers as they pick up the pieces and ensure that production is back on schedule. Satellite offices are being set up at their Umhlanga Rocks premises.

It is Craig’s plan to rebuild the Hurricane H.Q. at the same site in Morrison Street. He is philosophically confident that the incident will be the start of a new era for the core surfboard and accessory manufacturer.

“I would like to thank all those in the industry who have been so supportive with messages of encouragement,” said Craig.

The satellite office number at the Hurricane Surf Store is 031 561 3267. Craig and Ryan can be reached on 0834445701 and 0833896069 respectively.
