Fourth Fatal Shark attack at Second Beach, Port St Johns, in 24 months

21/12/09 - 10:23:04AM ~ By Admin ~

It has been reported that a 22-year-old Transkei lifeguard lost his life at Second Beach, Port St Johns, after being attacked by a shark on Friday. This marks the third shark attack death in the area in under a year and the fourth shark fatality in 24 months.

The body of the victim has not been recovered and his identity has been withheld. The incident occurred in flat seas and in discoloured, muddy waters. The shark species in the latest incident is unknown.

The first attack at Port St Johns this year took place in January when lifeguard Sikhanyiso Bangilizwe (26) was killed while swimming near the midbreak. The shark was believed to be a Tiger Shark.

16-year-old surfer Luyolo Mangele lost his life in the second attack while surfing after school, shortly before the Easter school holidays. Luyolo was attacked by a Zambezi, notorious for their territorial behaviour and aggressiveness.
