Sardine Run Update: 15/07/10

15/07/10 - 18:46:25PM ~ By Mike Anderson-Reade - KZN Sharks Board ~

Activity started off fairly slowly this morning. Concentrations of fish in the area stretching from Amanzimtoti through to Umtwalume with the largest shoals in the Scottburgh, Park Rynie and Ifafa areas. One good size netting took place at Baisley beach, Ifafa during mid morning and a second netting at Scottburgh towards lunch time. Seine netters complaining about the shallow, rough inshore sea conditions with a 1.5m swell making it very difficult to access any fish.

It appears as if these shoals are moving very quickly northwards and the KZN Sharks Board will be removing the shark safety gear off Anstey’s and Brighton beaches and reducing the gear off Durban in anticipation of the arrival of these small shoals.

Weather off the KZN coast is expected to deteriorate over the next 24 hours due to the arrival of a cold front and it is hoped that this will not result in the disappearance of the sardines.
