The KZN Sharks Board (KZNSB) undertook a sardine survey flight this morning (Friday 18 June) landing shortly after 12:30. Most of the activity is still off the Wild Coast off the Waterfall Bluff area, Mngazana to the south off Port St John’s and off Coffee Bay.
Hundreds of gannets and dolphins in these areas. On the KZN coast a small pocket was seen behind backline off Widenham just south of the Umkomaas River, another off Sezela and one small pocket off Pumula. None of these fish appear to have predators accompanying them. There is a possibility of netting taking place however this is fairly remote due to the inshore conditions making it difficult to see the fish from the beach. The hotline 083 913 9495 has been updated and will be updated if there more information becomes available. A total of 49 humpback whales were also seen between Durban and Coffee Bay, all migrating north with the majority about 3km offshore. Sharks safety gear has been removed from a number of beaches on the south coast, bathers are requested to check with the life guards prior to entering the sea. The KZNSB has however endeavoured to keep major bathing facilities open and will continue to monitor the situation. Issued by: Mike Anderson-Reade Head: Operations KZN Sharks Board
