East London surfing legend passes away

11/02/10 - 11:59:59AM ~ By Admin ~

Mick Pollock, honorary life member of the Border Surfing Association, passed away in East London yesterday (10 February). Mick had a profound influence on surfing in East London. He was president and secretary of BSA for many years, and was a pioneer of the surf industry in the area: the eponymous Pollock Sports was run by him and  his sons John and Dave in the 70's and 80's. The genesis of the business goes back to 1943 when Mick started Quicks. The shop was a hub for the local surf community.

"He's been a father figure to many surfers in the area," said Dave Fish.

Mick was inducted into the SA Surfing Hall of Fame in 1999. 2010 has unfortunately started off as a year when many of the surfers who helped shape South African surfing into what it is today, have passed away.
