Shark Attack at Fish Hoek, Cape Town - Surfer reports on the incident from Twitter

01/01/70 - 02:00:00AM ~ By Admin ~

The scene from where @skabenga reported the gnarly incident from.

News has just come in that a shark attack has taken place on a swimmer at Fish Hoek beach in Cape Town. The news broke at 15:40 today when a surfer posted the incident on the popular micro blogging portal Twitter. The news soon spread on Twitter before popular News publishers across South African picked up the story and broke with it on their websites. Eye Witness News seemed to be the fastest to break with the story from a news brand.

As of the time of writing this authorities are currently searching for the remains of the victim. Tragically, according to the bulk of online reports, the victim was a foreigner who was attacked in waist deep water. He was at Fish Hoek beach enjoying the New year holiday with his family.

@skabenga, who according to his history of posts seems to be a keen Kalk Bay local, reported that the attack took place in front of his house just after half past 3 today. For the past few hours @skabenga has been posting updates to the incident. Below are the Twitter accounts of the incident  taken off @skabenga’s Twitter page:

Tue 12 Jan at 15:40: Holy shit, we just saw a GIGANTIC shark eat what looked like a person right in front of our house in fishhoek. Unbelievable.

Tue 12 Jan at 15:44: Emergency services just arrived. It must have been a person. The shark breached it's head out the water no remains http://yfrog.com/1dronnpj

Tue 12 Jan at 15:47: We are dumbstruck, that was so surreal. That shark was HUGE. Like dinosaur huge. #sharkattack #fishhoek

Tue 12 Jan at 16:06: Helicopters are out and looking for any trace of the remains. Shark headed off Clovelly way #fishoek #sharkattack

Tue 12 Jan at 16:15: Ironically the Cape Times issued a shark warning a few hours ago. http://bit.ly/8Qs2zW

Tue 12 Jan at 16:40:
there was no thrashing or struggle visible so we assume the shark had already struck once and the victim was unconscious.

Tue 12 Jan at 16:42: @stii apparently whale watchers just found half a body .... lucky there arent many waves to miss out on by not surfing in FH :)

I am not sure if one could classify the very few shark attacks over goodness how many years as a spate. However, my suggestion is that we rather refer to them as fatal shark encounters as the shark would have been tasting (which is the norm) when it took the bottom half of the man's torso - it is their territory after all. My wife and I were there about 20-30 minutes after the attack (observing from the coast road) and we spoke to a coloured gentleman who had been sitting with the shark spotter at the time - he said that they had spotted 2 sharks at the start of the encounter.

We go into the ocean and yes it's the sharks territory, if it's ur time it's ur time! But us humans have overtaken the lions territory, why are they then locked up in zoo's and behind electrical fencing. We just want to separate ourselves from the sharks using nets. Sure all bathers and surfers could live in a sense that fear can be restricted.

Durban has shark nets and it's the surfing capital of SA. WHY can CPT not put in Shark nets in the False Bay area, It's the sharks territory, but please that's such a lame excuse!!!!!
