Whale washes ashore at Umhlanga A humpback whale calf an estimated 7.5 metres in length has washed up on Umhlanga’s main beach in front of the Pearls development. The whale was already dead when it drifted ashore, so even a quick response from the public and nearby Natal Sharks Board was futile in trying to save the animal. |

Shark attacks diver on KZN south coast Tues 28 June 2011 - A 22 year-old American research diver has been attacked by what is suspected to be a 3-metre long Dusky shark. He was diving off Aliwal Shoal, which is situated about 5km offshore from Umkomaas on the KZN south coast. |

Sardines one week away from KZN Between the month's of June and July each year the east coast sees masses of slippery, silver fish moving northwards en-masse. It's called the Sardine Run and is eagerly awaited every season by fisherman and beachgoers alike. East London surfer swims to shore and helps saves fishermen In the early hours of Sunday morning, about 7 nautical miles east of Port Alfred, ten fisherman aboard a 45ft chokka boat were facing danger in huge seas. In a double dose of misfortune their vessel was then struck by lightning. Skipper Mark McArthur, a Yellowsands local, hurried below deck to assess the damage caused by the lightning leaving another member of the crew at the wheel. Their craft was broadsided by a large wave and then capsized. |
