Reef Wetsuits / Ocean & Earth carries on its support of the Shark Spotter program

11/03/10 - 13:25:45PM ~ By Admin ~

Reef Wetsuits / O & E continue their loyal and dedicated support to the local community by donating a large sum of money to the Shark Spotters Organization who are based in Cape Town.

The Shark Spotters Program’s primary objective is to provide an efficient early warning system to alert ocean users to the presence of large sharks in the inshore area. We also aim to educate the public about sharks and their behaviour, as well as contribute towards research on great white sharks, as we believe that if we can reduce the already small risk of a shark bite then we can contribute to the community’s well-being, make a meaningful contribution to white shark conservation and set a precedent in how people and sharks can co-exist.

We got hold of Sarah Titley who is the Projects Manager of KEAG, (Kommetjie Environmental Awareness Group) to ask her what this donation means to the Organization.

"We are going to use the donation that was given to us by Reef Wetsuits / Ocean and Earth to pay towards the bakkie that we use every day in the field. " Sarah said. "The vehicle is an essential piece of equipment in the day to day running of the Shark Spotters. It gives the field manager the mobility to check on each spotting site during the day, give training to all the spotters, as well as solve any logistical or equipment problems as they happen. In essence it is vital  for the smooth running of the program."

The Shark Spotters program relies heavily on donations made by the public and local businesses.
Sarah explains just how important these donations are.

"With the support of local businesses and communities the Shark Spotters can provide a more efficient and effective service to ocean users. It would allow the program to develop in its current locations and expand to other areas around the city, and create more awareness through education to the presence of sharks in our area, and their importance in the ecosystem."

Sarah also told us that it is not necessarily the bigger businesses that make the only impression every individual can also contribute so that the program can improve and grow.

"We are constantly looking for support from public both in terms of donations to the program and also in the form of services. We want to appeal to the public that if they have any queries, concerns or suggestions for the program that they get in touch with us as only through continual community involvement can we ensure we are offering the best possible service to the communities."

"Shark Spotters wishes to thank Wetsuits SA for their continued support. Their generosity has ensured that we are able to continue providing this important initiative to the communities in which we work."

"Again, many many thanks!"
