The first Wave Wizard’s Surf Club event of the 2012 series was held this past weekend at Bronze Beach Umhlanga Rocks. The overcast and chilly winter conditions did nothing to halt the surfers and their families from flocking to the beach to watch as the surfers took part in the very contestable but trying 3-5 foot waves.

Surf brand O’Neill, widely respected as the ‘first name in the water,’ has embarked on an eight-month, global art and innovation tour in celebration of its 60th year of operation. So far the tour has had exhibitions in Sydney, Bali, Tokyo and recently in Holland, with the next stop scheduled for Durban, South Africa in July.

South Africa’s premier surfing event, the Mr Price Pro Ballito, has once again attracted the crème of international professional surfing with 12 of the Top 32 surfers in the world entered into this year’s event with a prize purse in excess of R2 Million.

The sixth annual South African Surfing Awards presented by Zigzag is set for a huge evening at the Wave House in Gateway, Durban, on 29 June 2012.

John John Florence (HAW), 19, has won his maiden ASP ASP World Championship Tour event, taking out the Billabong Rio Pro over Joel Parkinson (AUS), 31, in barreling three-to-four foot (1 metre) waves at Barra da Tijuca.

The Billabong Rio Pro, Event No. 3 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, returned to the powerful beachbreak of Barra da Tijuca for the second consecutive day in three-to-five foot (1-1.5 metre) barrels which provided the ideal canvas for the world's best surfers to push the limits of high-performance beachbreak surfing.

After a four-day break from competition, the Billabong Rio Pro launched back to action at the primary venue of Barra da Tijuca as world’s best surfers did battle in challenging four-to-six foot (1.5 – 2 metre) barrels at the primary venue.

Saturday the 12 May at Llandudno Beach was the first Llandudno event of its kind, and one of many for the year ahead. Over 300 spectators watched the field of 75 local surfers from the Hout Bay, Llandudno and Camps Bay area.

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 21, has taken out the Billabong Women’s Rio Pro over Coco Ho (HAW), 21, by a score of 14.10 to 14.03 in peaky one-to-three foot (.5 metre) waves at the primary venue of Barra da Tijuca.

BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Friday, May 11, 2012) – With small one-to-two foot (.5 metre) waves on offer at Barra Da Tijuca, event organizers at the Billabong Rio Pro have opted to call competition off for the day.

The 2012 Billabong Rio Pro, Stop No. 3 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, kicked off competition at the secondary venue of Arpoador this morning and the event’s top seeds dominated the clean two-to-four foot (1.5 metre) lefthanders on offer for Round 1.

Saturday dawned with big ten to twelve foot waves wrapping in the bay for the final day of the South African Longboard Championships.

Kelly Slater (USA), 40, reigning 11-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 1, has withdrawn from the Billabong Rio Pro following a heel injury sustained in Java.

The draw has been finalized for the next stop on the ASP World Championship Tour, the Billabong Rio Pro, cementing the Round 1 match-ups for the world’s best surfers to go down at Rio de Janeiro’s Barra da Tijuca this week.

The 2012 South African Surfing Awards, presented by Zigzag, will be held on 29 June at the Wavehouse in Umhlanga, and is set to be a riotous affair with top comedian Nic Rabinowitz headlining the show as MC.
