The Brah Grill - with Ryan Payne
We recently interviewed Shaun Payne just minutes after his Xcel Pro Showdown at Supertubes win, and he had his golden moment to thank all the sponsors and diss anyone he wanted to. He took the opportunities presented to do just that – thank his sponsors and diss his boet – fairly subtle (It was just a matter of time before the natural order of things came into being. There is only one real Payne surfing force, etc.) But still a diss. Thing is, Ryan has won two of the events and came pretty darn close to taking the hat trick, so we thought it only fair that he had a chance to air his views on the whole palaver as well.

The Brah Grill - with Dene Botha
Recently though, you may have also spotted him on the cover of some saucy magazines... He’s been doing some modelling work and appearing in a number of national Pretty Face competitions of late, and this kind of thing could only go on for so long before Zag caught up with him, and grilled him.

The Brah Grill - with Ryan Miller His images have graced the covers and pages of magazines around the world. He makes a living by taking photos of his famous best friend and selling them to the highest bidder. It all sounds a little dodgy, but it’s not what you’re thinking.

The Brah Grill - with Travis Logie He's currently SA's most experienced campaigner on tour, has doggedly fought his way back from injuries to requalify for the Dream Tour twice. He's beaten world champs, been dubbed one of the fastest surfers around, won an ISA World title on home soil and appeared topless on Carte Blanche. Travis Logie may be back on the WQS, but the word on the beach is he’s surfing harder and better than ever. In fact, we’ve got good money on it the man is going to be back in the big leagues come 2012. But not before we grilled him.

The Brah Grill - with Jeremy Johnson After a season bouncing around the Northern Hemispheres big-wave zones and the showdown looming for the XXL, we thought it high time we find out exactly who this Jeremy Johnson is, and grill him…

The Brah Grill - with Jean Paul Veaudry Sharks scare the hell out of most surfers, they're always in the back of our minds when we paddle out to a new or remote spot, and although the experts say that you're more likely to get struck by lightning or hit by a car than to be attacked, most of us don't walk down the street with thoughts of car accidents or lightning strikes in the back of our minds.

The Brah Grill - with Ari Kraak The surname Kraak surname is synonymous with South African surfing. Most surfers who've had a brush with the industry or been down to J-Bay would have bumped into Ari, son of the famous Cheron, at some stage.
Over the years he's broken away from the standard surfing mold and chalked up quite a CV along the way.

The Brah Grill - with Casey Grant In July last year Casey Grant had the country talking after his impressive display at the Mr Price Pro, where he ripped all the way to the final eventually being stopped by world title runner-up Jordy Smith. He finished 2010 off with a bang by taking back-to-back wins in the Lizzard and Fever X-Games events. Come 2011 we bumped into Casey at his home break of Scottburgh and found him decked out in bright red boardies with a whistle hung proudly around his neck. Intrigued we sat down and grilled him about his new job, the future and Scotties rocks...

The Brah Grill - with the Bromdog Matt Bromley flew all the way from Kommetjie to Pipeline to compete in the Volcom Pipeline Pro. We started picking up some social media from Hawaii that Bromdog was charging. He didn’t win it, but we caught with him after the contest, and grilled him.

The Brah Grill - with Dunes local and Member of Parliament Tim Harris Cape Town surfer Tim Harris is a Member of Parliament (the first surfer in SA to do so) for the Democratic Alliance, serving on the finance committee. In between sneaky sessions at Dunes, he finds himself writing legislation and taking care of pretty serious Mzansi business. So naturally, we grilled him.

The Brah Grill - with Ben Trovato The first magazine Ben Trovato ever brought was a copy of Zigzag decades ago, when he was learning to surf on a board that was the equivalent of a flattened sunfish. Since he’s a published author and regular columnist for a leading weekly newspaper we offered him a column. It was the start of a beautiful, twisted relationship - and as good excuse as any to turn the tables and grill him…

The Brah Grill with the Tripod - Ricky Basnett, Warwick ‘Wok’ Wright and Dan Redman Ricky Basnett, Dan Redman and Warwick ‘Wok’ Wright need no introduction to SA surfing. The KZN trio has been close buds since they were groms, smashing big wins on the QS while pushing each other in the water, and just living the dream. But Tripod, as they’re collectively known, has now taken on a life of its own with the trio banding together to launch their website, appropriately named theTripod.tv.

The Zag Brah Grill - with shaper, videographer and paddle-ski maker, Lampeace Johannes ‘Lampeace’ Lamprecht has been part of the East London scene for yonks, either shaping quality boards, hooking lips at The Reef, or capturing homegrown stoke in his collection of classic DVDs and video clips...

The Zag Brah Grill - with veteran Durban City lifeguard Rocky Randall Ethekweni beach lifeguard and frothing surfer Rocky Randall has been a part of the furniture along the Golden Mile for over two decades and has seen it all. Although Rocky still reckons Durban is one of the world’s best surfing cities, it has lost some of its spirit and the waves are not quite as good as it once used to be. We decided to corner the guy and get his take on what exactly has changed, having a beach as an office, rasing a frothing grom, sun protection and busting out a banana hammock for a nice even tan.

The Brah Grill - with Big Wave World Tour surfer, Chris Bertish Cape Town big wave charger Chris Bertish has just come off a hot result in America where he placed 2nd in humongous surf at the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic. The contest saw the biggest, most wild waves ever paddled into during a contest in Oregon and the epic achievement has catapulted him into 4th spot on the current Big Wave World Tour rankings. With Chris’ two favourite big wave events coming up at Mavericks and Todos Santos in the next few months, we thought it would be an opportune time to corner Chrispy and grill him about his latest result at Nelscott, gunning for the Big Wave World Title and where he sees big wave surfing headed...

The Brah Grill - with Zigzag cover-holder, David Scard It is unusual that a South African does not score the Zag’s front page. Our blood is brazenly green and we fiercely keep that spot, in most cases, reserved for Saffas. But on some rare occasions a photo lands in our email of a foreigner that becomes a strong contender as an option for our latest cover shot. As was the case with our latest issue where the prestigious page one location is the now the proud property of an underground Aussie charger, David Scard.
