Monday 20 June 2011 is International Surfing Day.

10/06/11 - 00:00:00AM ~ By Zigzag ~

ISD is all about celebrating surfing. Get barrelled off your nut or clean up the beach - any way you choose to celebrate is up to you.

Ten years ago they decided it was high-time surfers had their own special day to take a moment out and pay homage to this fine lifestyle we’re all privileged to lead. A few friends scoring some waves and picking up a bit of litter snowballed into a global phenomenon, with surfers from over 25 countries now getting involved. Beach cleanups, environmental rallies, surf contests, music jams – it’s all going down on ISD across the world.

The biggest question is: where are you going to be, and what are you going to be doing?

Although it falls on a Monday, Zag highly recommends dropping everything and taking some time out to hit the beach, and do your thing. So consider this your official doctor’s note. See you in the water on 20 June.

Visit www.intlsurfingday.com to see what’s going on around the world.

[In recognition of ISD, we’ve teamed up with Tuffy to include a customised garbage bag in the next issue of Zag (35.5) to help you do your bit for the environment, cos it isn’t only one day that you can do your bit. This is no ordinary garbage bag though – all Tuffy’s are made out of 100% recycled plastic, and this one can help you win Reef’s top of the range wetsuit, the Eclipse, valued at R2650.

Simply take a snap of yourself putting your Tuffy to good use - entries can be as straightforward or ingenious as you like - and email it to Zigzag via the ad guy on doug@zigzag.co.za. Hint: we like ingenious. Magazine goes on sale 30 June, with the winner announced in the following issue.]

Question
Should fishermen be allowed to pull a trek net through the lineup and bathing area at Surfer’s Corner in Muizenberg?

Yes, people’s lives depend on it (food). The surfers and bathers have alternatives.

No, people’s lives depend on it (shark attacks). The fishermen have alternatives.

No opinion either way, don’t care, doesn’t make a difference to the universe, etc.
