Oakley 1wavewonder - T minus 8 to uploads, T minus 3 to cyclone Funso swell

23/01/12 - 00:00:00AM ~ By Admin, www.1wavewonder.co.za ~

Cyclone Bengiza, 2011

Cyclone Bengiza, 2011. Photo Patterson.

Have your video cameras ready as Cyclone Funso sends east coasters more east swell madness for the next seven days. Entries recorded in the month of January are valid for the first upload (the first month is Jan + Feb) and the upload function gets officially switched on in 8 days time.

The SW Indian Ocean has been alive with activity for most of the new year, and our network of spies reported cooking surf this weekend in R-Bay, Durban, the lower South coast and East London. Even a few places further around the corner got a trickle of east swell. Not a bad way to kick off the new year.

The apex of the swell from Funso will start on about Wednesday, and it should be a long run of consistent waves. We can confirm that the banks between the Durban piers are tits right now, so if you can't hook up with a videographer or photographer, maybe it's time to get yourself a gopro. Wednesay to Thursday by the way is one of the most easterly ground swells in years, so some unique spots could start firing. Have a look at the Thursday swell angle for Scottburgh (www.swell.co.za/scott) for a chart you don't often see.

Monthly prizes are (x 5)
R9000 for the winning surfer
R6000 for the winning videographer

The grand prizes are
R30K cash and a Yamaha WaveRunner valued at R130k for the winning surfer
An all expenses paid trip for two to Macaronis in the Mentawais courtesy of All Aboard Surf Travel for the winning videographer

MORE ABOUT THE OAKLEY ONE WAVE WONDER

Tubes, airs, carves, tow-ins, tow-ats, massive waves, small waves, combos...

We're looking for anything deemed an outstanding single ride by entrants that pushes the performance of surfing. And the best thing? It's open to any South African surfer.

The rules remain largely the same. The event officially starts 1 February 2012, but with a slightly different prize structure. The monthly loot has been increased to R15000, (R9000 to the surfer, R6000 to the person who documents it). All five monthly winners will automatically become finalists for the Ride of the Season, where one winner will be voted for after the contest closes on 30 June 2012.

As with the 2011 edition, both January and February rides will count for the first month, which means counting rides start 1 January 2012. To upload entries or vote, simply sign up as a member on this website when the event officially opens on 1 February 2012.

Question
Should fishermen be allowed to pull a trek net through the lineup and bathing area at Surfer’s Corner in Muizenberg?

Yes, people’s lives depend on it (food). The surfers and bathers have alternatives.

No, people’s lives depend on it (shark attacks). The fishermen have alternatives.

No opinion either way, don’t care, doesn’t make a difference to the universe, etc.
