Van Riebeeckstrand river mouth in Melkbos was the chosen venue for the second event in the Roll With RVCA series. This grassroots surfing series is presented by local surf shops across the country, with the Melkbos competiton being presented by Boost Surf Shop in Big Bay. There were 70 surfers in attendance for the event, and some great surfing went down in the two to three-foot of surf that was available on the day.
A number of big names were around for this tournament, proving the popularity of this new series. Names like Gavin Roberts, Robbie Shofield and Mikey February found their way to the finals of their respective divisions and all were pushing for the R10,000 in RVCA products that was in the prize pool, as well as honours that go with such a contest victory.
In the Ladies Division there was some great surfing, and it was Sabrina Scott who surprised all and snatched first place from the highly-touted Chantelle Rautenbach. Holly Armstrong and Penny Stemmet came in third and fourth place.
The highly-competitive U16 Division saw favourite Diran Zakarian beat Max Armstrong into second place. Third was Jonathan Drewnickie, with Tristan Lev in fourth. The goofy-footer Zakarian caught a few good lefts in the final that saw him surge into the lead with some powerful turns that left the rest of the finalists fighting it out for the minor spots.
Mikey February from Kommetjie beat the up-and-coming Papi Makanyane in the U19 Division with Joandre Blignaut and Jacob Mellish coming in third and fourth respectively. The highly succesful February has a number of great results behind him and this victory will be another confidence booster and a great addition to his trophy cabinet.
The Open Men's Division saw some electrifying surfing going down, with Gavin Roberts proving his supremacy amongst some tough competition and securing first place. Robbie Schofield, now living in Cape Town, was narrowly beaten into second place, and Ian Armstrong continued to represent for the Armstrong family, coming in third place. Johan Kriek was in fourth.
Stephan Lindeque from Boost Surf Shop was pleased with the day's surfing. "It was a great event and we had a good turnout," said Lindeque. "The waves were fun throughout the day and there was a great vibe on the beach amongst all the competitors and their families. Some excellent surfing went down and we were really happy to be involved."
